My Convention Career: 1997

Due to my mother's death in February, I only attended worldcon this year.

LoneStarCon, San Antonio -- Probably my most laid-back worldcon since Chicon V. I'd agreed to help Laurie Mann out in Press Relations but instead of the media onslaught we're used to in larger cities, this turned out to be a real sinecure. (I did get quoted in the Austin Chronicle, though!) This con is memorable for neo-pro disaster Dan Gallagher, who ruined one panel I was on and tried to (unsuccessfully) worm his way onto another that I was moderating. This was balanced by one of the more fun panels I've ever been on: "Science Fiction Musicals," which quickly degenerated into a more genre-free discussion of musicals in general.
